Many of the game's areas are unlocked in a linear order some are unlocked on the Map by completing a certain quest or by learning their locations from an NPC, while others can be unlocked simply by completing the previous area.Īll the game's levels are indicated by marks on a map, which can be selected by moving a red cursor across the screen with the arrow keys. In Phoenotopia, the Map's interface is linear for the most part. The World Map can be accessed by exiting the level you are currently in. It is a very large map of Castland that provides an interface with which the player can choose any of the destinations they've unlocked so far. Overall: If you want to try this because you like the genre just know you will most likely get a little or very frustrated with it's downfalls. The World Map, or simply the Map, is the overlying screen that allows the player to traverse between the levels of Phoenotopia and Phoenotopia: Awakening.

Using some ranged weapons that has aim is also limited and doesn't seem to accept the full 360 range of a joystick so you will have difficulty aiming to fire accurately (Of course enemies do not have to worry about this and will fire ranged attacks with better precision than you). With combat though I would not even dare try a keyboard with all teh other things you have going against you in combat. I've been playing with an Xbox controller but for things like crawling prone or cooking I switch to the keyboard for that. Controls: Some control input seems to have poor response ingame. Bosses have a noticeable progression but where I am at the time of this review (3rd storyline boss) was absolutely off the walls absurd (If you don't avoid one particular attack you're paralyzed for nearly 10 seconds - The boss doesn't attack during this time but it's just frustrating). I've been playing this on easy but really the difficulty spikes with some area and bosses you're really playing on a higher difficulty whether you like it or not. Combat Difficulty: Enemies can absolutely juggle you and some attacks sends you bouncing off walls and it's kind of ridiculous. Another component to this that puts you at a disadvantage is the controls which I'll cover seperately since it also involves non combat. This means you have to account for that extra delay at the end and consider even doing it. Most movements or attacks you do have to fulfill their animation which seems to carry on for a few frames too many and that is what leaves you exposed. Combat Movement: Your character movement is oddly clunky but it seems intentional. Read some of negative comments and some point out this too. Combat: This is the part I actually dislike the most and it's a shame because there is so much combat involved. It's cool that they have these notes to give more immersion but it does make a little hard to remember what you have to push to remember the note on top of the sequence (I just put together a reference that I can go off of instead of that). While gameplay related there is a music component in the game (Key Item) and the notes are icons which are mapped to directions. I put the volume down pretty low so I may not be hearing it on most maps but the boss music absolutely slaps and really has that "It's go time" vibe (It's on Youtube!). The overworld what I relate to as the Zelda 2 with enemies spawning on a map and if encountered you get a small sidescrolling map with a few enemies and maybe an item or two. I'll also put the quest and sidequest content in here which gives you a lot to do with the collection of things and puzzles. Many areas utilize doorways on both sides (Basically front and back to give it more depth). A lot of detail ranging from fields, forests and swamps to cities and their cluttered design (Intentional to give off that cramped city vibe). World: Really cool design for the different areas. Has some light tones and a little humor but doesn't overdo it.

I will say this game is good (Seriously Steam update your review system) but would put this at a lower rate if that existed.
